At Our Sisters’ School, we pride ourselves on holding students to high standards and high levels of accountability for both their behavior, and also for their level of preparation for high school and beyond, including areas such as organization skills and self-regulation. To facilitate this process, OSS teaching faculty and staff issue detention slips to students for:

  • Incomplete homework or late long-term class assignments
  • Lack of organization skills leading to missing work or school forms
  • Behavior which is less than the OSS ideal of respect and honesty and requires reflection by the student and a plan for improvement moving forward.

During their first year enrolled at Our Sisters’ School, and especially the first few months of school that fall, students usually receive numerous detention slips as they adjust to this new level of expectations and responsibility for the first time. Beyond this time period, a few students continue to struggle with taking complete responsibility for their organizational skills, particularly when their families – for a variety of reasons, including limited English proficiency – are unable to take a lead role in supporting this process. Whenever possible, detentions and other staff interventions in these areas are designed to scaffold student’s independence and self-reliance in terms of planning and completing schoolwork, asking for help when needed, managing paperwork and school forms, and solving issues with peers and staff members proactively and respectfully.
