Weekly Update: October 16,2026

This past Wednesday we had a professional development day and our unshakable focus on high quality teaching and learning landed us at Gillette Stadium for the annual MassCue conference. We joined thousands of educators from the New England area to learn more about enhancing teaching and learning through technology. This weekend more than half of our students will participate in the STEM for Girls conference held at UMDartmouth; we have attended annually since 2016, and this event has clearly become an OSS tradition. Later this month all of our students will spend a full day at Bridgewater State University learning about astronomy, sustainability, DNA, genealogy and cybersecurity!

In Science class this week, 7th graders explored the process of osmosis through a hands-on experiment using raisins. Students placed raisins in two different liquids—pure water and a sugar solution—to investigate how the concentration of a liquid affects the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane. By observing and comparing the raisins, students learned how water moves into and out of cells, and how the surrounding environment can affect their size and appearance. Scroll through the photos below…

And in 6th grade, as part of their history unit about human origins, students created art based on research about animals of the Neolithic time period.

Q1 Clubs Wrap-Up & Q2 Clubs Are Coming!

We’ve had a wonderful first quarter of clubs, with students exploring new interests, building skills, and having fun together! A quick reminder that Q1 clubs wrap up the week of October 26.

We’re excited to kick off Q2 clubs in November, and we still have a few spaces available!

Evening Study Dismissal Reminder:

Students attending Evening Study are expected to remain for the full session and be dismissed at 5:00 PM. We understand that special circumstances may require a student to leave early. In these cases, a parent or guardian must come into the front office, present a valid photo ID, and sign the student out. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep all students safe and accounted for!

Thanksgiving Fixin’s:

As the holiday season approaches, OSS is exploring opportunities to support our families through Thanksgiving meal packages, holiday meals, and gifts for students, thanks to the generosity of our community partners.

‍Holiday Survey

We invite families who may be interested in receiving holiday assistance to complete our brief interest form above. We will follow up with more information as opportunities become available.

Community Resources:

The New Bedford Connect event illustrated below will host more than 40 organizations including barbers, food and support resources for mental health, medical, legal, housing, the RMV and much more! Walt's Closet will be there with lots of free clothing, toiletries, shoes, underwear, socks and assorted items.

Have a beautiful weekend. See you Monday morning!
